bye bye zeuski’s

img_1246.JPG

The times they are a changing. The weather is balmy, the leaves turning red and gold. Big baby leaves ‘home’ and goes back to university after Labour Day, and little baby starts high school.

Zeuski’s, the restaurant at which my first born has worked … forever … is closing down for good this weekend. It’s been a fixture on the Whistler scene as long as we have been in town, and then some. Today I popped on over to sit in the sunshine and pay my final respects to the eating establishment as I watched my chile doing a very fine job of manning the bar, while the little chile ate her calamari lunch :)

Then it was over to the high school to pick up course schedules that never made it in the mail. And while checking out my baby daughter’s homeroom class, the science lab, the lockers … I felt this odd little pang. I mean, it was only yesterday I started secondary school.

I know exactly what shirt I wore and who I sat with that very first day. I remember what we spoke about. And I remember my friend Laura was wearing black nail polish. I had never seen black nail polish.

Time can play odd little tricks with your mind. Because while times change and the body grows old — something inside stays intrinsically the same. While I’m a mother and a wife, deep down somewhere I’m still that rebellious 20-year-old. I’m still that kid I was at age 12 … and five … and two ….

And I know that deep down in my own mother lives the little girl who was raised in a Japanese concentration camp – the kid who lost her own mother to starvation and almost lost her dad to torture. I know because that child pops out every now and then, and we’ve talked about it.

Makes one think. And it reminds me, you never can judge another on face value. There are just too many people deep down there inside of us all.

And on that nostalgic note ;), a very happy Labo(u)r Day Weekend to all who celebrate it, and a pleasant transition into the change of seasons.

Very insightful post. I can tell you that Alzheimer’s brings back that child - I’m dealing with the 3 year old most days now.

Now you do know that this post has also made me very curious.

I’m always a little surprised when I look in the mirror. That’s me? Really? I’m not sure what my mind thinks I look like, but it’s not what I see in the mirror. Not even close. Strange, hmmm?

And taking people at face value is such an instinctive act. We look at someone, size them and their situation up and make decisions. All within our nature and done within a split second, but I think we’ve allowed society to warp our instincts terribly and so our perceptions are skewed. We need to get back to our roots and see people for what’s important. Kindness. Integrity. Honesty. Loyalty. Sincerity. Etc. Etc.

Forget all this crap about white teeth and shining hair and the right clothes and avoiding wrinkles. In the end are people going to remember us because our teeth were less than neon or are they going to remember that we offered our love and support when they needed it? Or worse, that we didn’t?

    Thanks for the post, Loreth!

I know that mirror problem too well, Meretta :) Too true.

((Bailey))) … curious? About the Indonesia-Japanese concentration camp history? I’ve got tons of stories about that :)

Tease. You know the historian in me is screaming.
