GETTING READY

getting-ready.JPG

Canadian geese, gathering in small flocks, milling around, doing trial flight runs. You can sense among them an aura of anticipation – readiness for a great and dangerous journey … and soon they will be gone. South. Somewhere warm and far away. And winter will sock in. No escape.

I took this photo yesterday, and it has since snowed solidly, and then rained — some of the heaviest rainfall on record. The ground is now one giant, slick slurpee, and not exactly ideal for marathon training. My shoes hang over the heater, new muscles ache from the changed posture required to avoid landing on one’s butt … and I am thinking … these geese are definitely onto something ….

Gorgeous picture, Loreth. I adore snow, so I’m jealous… but I’m betting that MUCH snow ALL THE TIME would peeve me somewhat… ;-)

  2. Meretta Says:

I think our geese hit Calgary and stop, their poor wings tired. Or so it seems when you drive by Bow River and see hundreds of them congregated.

I don’t envy you the slurpee run! I’m on my treadmill now. The roads here are too slick and I’m not risking getting hit by a car!

  3. Toni Anderson Says:

    Yikes!!

Our geese started moving last week after the first big snowfall. If I were them I’d have gone when the temperature was still above zero. Florida looks good right about now ;)

  4. Kristen Says:

I saw some geese yesterday. All of them flying south. It’s getting really chilly right now, it’s about 64 or so. Not really cold for you, I guess, but that’s freezing down here. Or at least, what it was last night – 40 degrees – is. =P I don’t evny you… but I do envy the geese!

  5. Bailey Stewart Says:

So yea, Kristen’s right – nights in the 40s. And I sleep with the ceiling fan on full speed, another fan blowing on high and the heat off. At 3:00 this morning I wake up because I’m too hot – off goes the top blanket and I sleep the rest of the night with just the sheet and one blanket. See, I love cold weather.

For us it’s the squirrels scurrying around frantically burying nuts for the winter stash. The geese only fly overhead on their way to Mexico.

  6. Loreth Says:

Lol Meretta … maybe the geese have me fooled and only go as far south as Vancouver :) . Seriously, what do those birds to when everything freezes over in Calgary?

  7. Loreth Says:

Bailey, 40 degrees sounds pretty pleasant … or have I screwed up my conversion from Metric?

And LOL Kristen … me too. I have geese envy. Snowbird envy. Mind you, the flying must be pretty tough going if you have to flap your wings yourself.

Yes .. stay off those roads, Meretta. At least I don’t have cars to worry about on my trails.
