LITTLE BEAR

little-bear.JPG

This little guy tried to get into our house this afternoon, just as I was about to leave for my run. I had my camera in hand, and was torn between shooting him close up, and making one helluva noise to scare him off. I did the right thing. Scared him off. An habituated bear is a dead bear.

Then, I took a picture :)

See the claw marks across his nose and eye? I suspect he’s a young male who has been scooted out my his mum and is struggling to find his own territory with all the big males picking on him. Life can be tough. And this is probably why he’s looking for easy food through my kitchen window. I hope he survives the season without being shot. And I mean by gun. Not camera.

And yes, this is research … I have bears in my upcoming ‘mantracker’ book ;)

Such a young pup. Hope he goes deep into the wilds and finds a lovely cave next to a stream full of Cutthroat :)

Oh gosh, that’s close. My MIL’s summer house is on Horsefly Lake & last summer a mature bear walked right up to her living room windows. Liz made herself big & stomped.
The bear stood up on its hind legs & put its paws on the window. There was a bit of a stand off while my Liz hollered for my FIL to come & do something! Finally the bear decided to leave & everyone heaved a sigh of relief about the strength of good double-glazed windows.

We have bears in a large urban forest about 5 km from my house but I haven’t seen one yet & frankly, don’t want to. Hope your little guy finds his safe turf soon.

Ah — dh has been trying to get me to Horsefly forever. (the fishing, you see) But what can I say? … there’s something about that name ;) I must get over my prejudice and give it a try …
Thanks for sharing the story. Scary.

Hopefully he learns to avoid people. A squirrel may get away with stealing some food from humans, like the Kinder squirrel here in Finland, but a bear who is too fond of food that people use is very soon in big trouble.

Hopefully he will grow up to be a big fellow that feeds on his natural food sources.
Lots of berries out there right now, lots of bear “droppings” that look like they are getting their fill.
We had a young male at our back door with the screens pulled over only - must say that is the first time I have truly been scared of a bear after many many encounters.
He was on his hind legs and I was speechless (yes, me speechless) when I found my voice I yelled “bear” and he ran off. A little close to an open door for me.
    Cheers, Irene

IRENE WAS SPEECHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!???? Now this would have been something to witness :)

Hope your summer is going well … am wondering if your mum is here …

  7. Irene Says:

She came and went while you were away.
She is looking forward to your new releases. She has read every one of your books….and loves them.
Yes, speechless, but for only a moment.
