GOALS — AND WRITING

Almost to this day last year I ran a marathon – in Victoria, BC (as I have done the last two years). But last year, I also ran another one, in Honolulu, in December.
I loved the way those marathon goals structured my life last year. They kept the writer balanced with the wannabe athlete in me. In fact, they kept a lot of things focused in me.
But his year, because my knees were shot – I did not have those same physical goals. And I did not have my October marathon bookend. I felt the loss come Thanksgiving weekend. I felt something was missing.
I have, however, written three books since this same day last October – but somehow I do not feel that same sense of total accomplishment. Something is lacking. I have gone soft, and I don’t like it.
It reminds me of the need for us to balance our lives as writers. It reminds me of the importance of having goals outside of the books. And with that in mind … I am setting some new ones …
Stay tuned … Because they should be fun

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO MY FELLOW CANUCKS

And don’t forget to change those clocks Sunday ….
ADDENDUM: Deadline dementia – working a month ahead can do this to one. Never mind the clocks. Not yet, anyway

SHOULDER SEASON - when things take a break

When everyone waits … for snow. The real thick powder dumps. And the crowds that will come.
One sure sign of shoulder season is the short line-up at our one-and-only Canada Post office. Today was such a day. Yay!
In winter the line is hours looooong. Full of Aussies, and Brits, and Scots, and Japanese, and Quebecois …. and you name it … picking up mail from home, not understandig the system, the accent, the language — waiting for care packs from mum and dad and aunt Sue …
But today it was quiet. And for the first time ever, a guy used the line on me: Do you come here often?
My uber witty repsonse, after looking over my shoulder for the camera: Um … I try not to.
His reply: Sooo, you come and pick up your mail here?
Ah — no. You?
Perhaps it’s shoulder season at the bars, too??? Or in my brain. Ya think?

AUTUMN FIRE

Now THIS is more like it. Tons of rain, and autumn fire.
Thanks to all who entered my contest, and to the winners — the books are now all in the mail. Let me know if for some reason they don’t make it! And I’d love to know what you think.
Now back to regularly scheduled deadlines …
